Um, hi neighbor.
I work on the second floor of a fairly large office. There are probably hundreds of people in the building, of which I know very few. I've had occasional moments of friendliness which have led me to meet a few people on the 5th floor. I was proud of that fact until it dawned on me that I have never met the person whose office is next door to mine. This week marks the one year since I started working here, and this morning, it struck me that one way I might be giving up joy in my life is by isolating myself and not bothering to get to know people. So, on my way back from the kitchen where I was getting my morning yerba mate, I uncomfortably poked my head into her office and said "Hello. I'm your neighbor. I've been working here a year now, and it seems a little crazy to me that we've never met." She laughed and agreed. We chatted for a few minutes and she thanked me for stopping in. It really wasn't so hard to do and I'm feeling emboldened. Next step, the other hundred or so people who work on this floor... I wonder where else I'm doing this in my life? I have started saying hello to people in elevators, particularly in my apartment building, but I know very few of my neighbors there. Time to take a closer look.
